As opening night rapidly approaches, the cast of the Middletown High School winter play 101 Dalmatians race to perfect the final scenes in time for the date of the first show, Dec. 14. Crucial steps like correcting dance numbers and fixing blocking will make the show run more smoothly.

This kid-friendly musical takes place in London in the household of Roger and Anita, played by MHS senior Parker Damm and MHS sophomore Katie Cowan.

The couple has two loving dogs, Pongo and Perdita, played by MHS senior Jason Spiegel and MHS sophomore Brittany Conyers. The pair is expecting puppies…15 of them.

Soon after the puppies arrive, the evil Cruella de Vil, played by MHS junior Haley Williams, comes to ruin their plan. Throughout the play, Cruella and her henchman cause havoc to all the characters.

Although the stress of a production can be overwhelming, assistant stage manager Veronica Clements says the cast is eager as ever.

“Everyone is being so enthusiastic,” says MHS junior Clements. “I haven’t heard any negativity.”

Spiegel says, “I’m pretty confident; we’ve all been working hard, and I’m sure it will be a good show.”

But as tech week looms just around the corner, there still is ominous pressure lurking in everyone’s mind.

Damm says that he is “thrilled to have the part of Roger,” but it can get difficult sometimes.

“It’s tough because I’ve got to talk and sing in a British accent,” he says.

Clements adds that even though everyone is being positive, the excitement can get chaotic. Late-night rehearsals aren’t ideal, but they “have to happen,” she says.

“It’s bittersweet to be doing my last winter show,” Spiegel says. “I’ll miss it, but it’s something I will always remember.”

The play will be performed on Dec. 14 and 15 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 for students and children and $10 for adults.
