When it comes to spring sports, Middletown High School’s boys and girls track teams are always worth keeping an eye on. With all-star coach Don Boyer, school, county and state record breaking is an annual tradition for both the boys and girls teams.

Though practice times and locations this year will be differing from years in the past due to snow, the athletes are not worried and are still anticipating a successful season.

Snow will not be the teams’ only set-back. Fewer athletes with previous experience are returning and the numbers of underclassmen outweigh that of the returning athletes.

“Due to the fact that we have a lot of new members on our team, I think that it’s going to be a challenging first few weeks–everyone figuring out what their best events are and getting in shape,” said returning MHS junior Cloe Ayenu.

Regardless of the obstacles the team may face, the runners are more excited than ever to prove their worth and show their talent.

“I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that we will be successful in the end, no matter the struggles we face in the beginning,” said Ayenu.

The girls are not the only ones with their eyes on the prize.

“Not having the numbers, depth and talent won’t stop us. We have many new kids, along with older kids, who haven’t had the chance to shine yet. Now is the time to show what they have and live up to the Middletown tradition,” said MHS returning junior Hunter Lumley.

Middletown is well known for its track team and has been for many years in the past. Despite the snow, changed practices, and new runners, the teams plan to continue their tradition.

The girls and boys teams have everything need for success: dedicated athletes, a well-experienced coach, and most importantly, the motivation to continue improvement.

“We may not have the superstars like we did in past years, but we want it more. We are going to work harder than ever before and never give up because we believe,” said Lumley.
