As the 2009 girls’ basketball season draws near there is much to look forward to on how Middletown High School’s varsity team will accomplish.

With players enthusiastic to play and for the season to begin, the Knights hope to have a winning season regardless of difficult opponents.

MHS junior Jacky Kessler, captain and point guard, is eager to put the team to work with old and new members.

 “I know most of the girls here, but I’m also eager to work with the new teammates. It’ll be interesting to see how far we can push each other to get to our ultimate goal,” said Kessler.

Since the team has the state championship in mind, they need to put in more effort than before and work extremely hard over the course of this season to improve their skills.

MHS sophomore Caitlyn Roy has taken her transition to the varsity team for a new school rather well. She has a chance to work with new coaches and team members.

Having played the sport for eight years, including a previous year at the varsity level at her old school, Roy knows the hard work that is involved with being on the team.

“Compared to JV, we work harder and it’s more serious. Teamwork is definitely a main part of being on the team. Coach Engle constantly tells us that we are ‘five hearts beating as one’ when we don’t let a teammate run alone,” said Roy.

Roy, just like many other girls on the team, is looking forward to a prosperous season with a chance to ‘win states so we could give the school a good name.’

The 2009-2010 season for the girls’ varsity basketball team seems to be a promising one. All they need now is fan support, consistent effort, and to always remember that as a team, anything can be done.
