MHS students react to threats from ISIS

After much turmoil and conflict with the terrorist group ISIS (Islamic State of Syria and Iraq), top American intelligence officials predict that the terrorist organization will likely attempt a direct attack on the US homeland this year.

Middletown High School students have many mixed reactions about this statement.

“Let’s run and hide,” said MHS sophomore Olive Radonich. This was a response shared by many other students.

It is a legitimate concern. ISIS has destroyed many cities and landmarks. Their power is increasing. There is a constant threat on America. The group has made attempts to get into the country.  In fact, there were approximately 60 ISIS linked people arrested in the US in 2015.

“The thought of something so devastating happening to the US is a frightening thought, given the fact that nothing has happened that was really significant while I have been alive” said MHS junior Peri Ketteringham.

Some MHS students have a different opinion on the situation.

“[ISIS] is saying things to scare us. They want us to be afraid of them,” said MHS sophomore Emma Poletti.

ISIS has not made a direct attack on our homeland yet, and US officials are doing their best to prevent the worst from happening. The threat is always there though. We just need to keep our eyes and ears open, and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
