Snow days could impact school calendar for this year

Main Street in Middletown was covered in show during the blizzard.

The heat turned to snow when Middletown High School got hit with a huge blizzard on Jan. 23, 2016. The snow was on average about three feet. The hazardous conditions of the storm lasted until Jan. 29, 2016 resulting in Frederick County Public Schools closing for five days.

Many students are now worried about the effect the unscheduled break will have on the school calendar.

FCPS has worked seven snow days in to the 2015- 2016 calendar. Because of the blizzard and recent snow day on Feb. 8, 2016, there is only one left. If the county experiences a third blizzard and schools are cancelled for more than one day, these days will be taken away from spring break. There will be no days added to the end of the year.

The calendar contains information about the order of measures to be taken with the schedule, available to students.

Tyler Harrison, MHS junior,  believes that a shorter spring break would be disappointing and that we will most likely use all of the snow days built in and will have to have a shorter spring break.

However, there is currently no need for an adjustment to the calendar.

BOE member, April Miller said that “No, the schedule will not be impacted yet.”

FCPS and MHS will update families with more information about cancellations and calendar updates as needed.

As of now, the start of the underclassman summer vacation will occur on June 20, 2016 provided that the remainder of allowed snow days are not used.
