Good Morning Knights – Today is Friday, February 6, and we are Ready Respectful and Relentless!

Please stand for the pledge: I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Please be seated.

Last week, your teachers explained classroom expectations and provided you with a course syllabus. Your teachers also reviewed school expectations like arriving to school on time, coming to class on time, and what it means to be Ready, Respectful and Relentless.

There are additional expectations that govern student and adult behavior while on school property. As the principal of the school, I am required to read the FCPS weapon policy for the next three days which is one policy that you will find on the county website.

The policy states, “it is unlawful for students to possess or use any weapon on school property. Students who have or use a weapon on school property will be suspended from school, and the police will be notified of the incident. A weapon is any object designed to harm another physically or an object which is used in a way to physically harm another. This school is committed to providing each of you with a safe environment and we will do all we can to carry out that responsibility including, if necessary, conducting searches of student lockers.” For additional policy information go to the FCPS.ORG website

The next club “A” day is Wednesday, February eleventh. Some club changes have been made so be sure to check out the updated rosters on the bulletin board in the cafeteria.

Send a Valentine a sweet treat! The SGA will be selling candy grams through Wednesday during all lunch shifts. Delivery will be on Thursday during fourth block.

Attention Juniors and Seniors: If you are interested in taking the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test, you must sign up in the counseling center today.

Attention FFA members: C D E Sign-ups are now posted in the Ag classrooms and on the FFA board. If you have any questions, please talk to Mrs. Shriner or Mrs. Seiser. C D Es are a great way to compete and get involved in the chapter. Competitions include: Food Science, Horticulture, Milk Quality and Products, and horse judging. Horse Judging will have their orientation and first practice on February ninth, from two-thirty to three-thirty.

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching! Stop by the school store to fill out your free valentine provided by the senior class. Valentines will be posted in the cafeteria so you can show your love and appreciation for your friends!

The MHS One-act Play Festival is this weekend with shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Tickets will be on sale in the cafeteria during all lunches today and also available at the door before each show.

Show your One-Team Spirit by joining the Boys and Girls Lacrosse Teams for a Fundraiser on Tuesday, February tenth from five PM to eight PM. You can pick up a flyer from Coach Crompton or Coach Martin or use your phone and show the flyer on the school website. This applies to eat-in, take-out and online orders. Come out and watch the MHS Ice Hockey team take on rival Urbana in the regular season finale today at four PM at Skate Frederick. Sip on hot chocolate while you watch us crush the Urbana Hawks. See you there!

Knights fans: Come out tonight and support our girls basketball team as they take on the patriots of Thomas Johnson high school. JV starts at five thirty with the Varsity game to follow.

I have been looking at your grades from term 2 and the semester grades and that made me think of a story. I told you earlier in the year about my parents getting divorced when I was in high school and that my family moved from a neighborhood where I was surrounded by good friends and could walk to school, to a huge housing project where I knew no one and had to ride the bus with people I didn’t know. So when all of that happened I missed some school during the move and the transition. I remember my teacher asking me repeatedly to stay after school with her to make up a test but my mother worked so there was no way for me to get a ride home. One day one of the students in my class said that he had to stay after school and that his mom could drive me home. While I thought it was nice of him to offer, I really didn’t want to stay after school with the teacher. I thought to myself, why would I stay after school with her because she doesn’t like me anyway and I was sure I did not like her either. Well, I ended up staying after and to my surprise, the teacher helped me catch up on my missing work and told me to come back to make up the test. Not only did my grade improve, I discovered that I actually liked the teacher. Two important things happened that year. First, the student offered to help me with my situation and, secondly, I made a decision to help myself. I agree with US Army veteran and writer John Holmes when he says, “There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.” During this month of February, think about how you can help yourself and help others. With something to think about, I’m Mrs. Jeffrey, have a beautiful day.
