Today is the beginning of National Banned Book week, when we celebrate our freedom to read what we choose by exploring attempts that have been made across the country to ban or restrict access to certain books. What book raised objections because it was viewed as “pornographic” and “obscene,” and because it featured “adultery,” “prostitution,” and a “womanizing preacher”? That would be the classic, The Scarlet Letter. Stop by the Media Center this week to see other examples of challenged books—and check them out!

For all cast and crew of A Christmas Carol:  there will be a production meeting this Wednesday at 7:15 in the auditorium.  Also, the October rehearsal schedule is available on the Drama board and on the MHS Drama website. Please contact Mrs. Duva with any questions.

Information is now available for The 2016 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest from Ms. Leonard in Room 517.  The deadline is January sixth and there are cash awards.

Students in Grades nine through twelve are eligible to apply for The Prudential Spirit of Community scholarship valued at $1,000. This award is designed to recognize students who have volunteered in their community and have made a difference in the lives of others. The ESSL in Frederick will be holding monthly meetings for women who are interested in Science and Engineering. WISE meets once a month and is open to all female high school students across the county. The first meeting is Wednesday, October fourteenth and the featured speaker is an electrical engineer specializing in infrared imaging and remote sensing.

If you are a senior and interested in seeing how real life politics work, please consider applying to be a page in Annapolis. Each page will spend two separate weeks in Annapolis, helping delegates and senators turn bills into laws. See Mr. Donald for more information. Applications are due Oct. 15th.
