The Round Table

A Divergent take on the film

Divergent, based on the novel by Veronica Roth, takes place in a futuristic dystopian society in which the population is split into five groups called ‘factions’, each having their own characteristics. When given an aptitude test to determine which faction she fits into, Tris, the courageous protagonist, discovers she doesn’t fit into a category, which is a dangerous quality they call “Divergent.” After choosing the “Dauntless” faction, Tris experiences a rigorous turn of events in stark contrast to the life she led at her previous faction, “Abnegation.”

Dedicated fans who read the Divergent trilogy prior to seeing the movie are likely to be pleased with the adapted screenplay. The only downside to it being so close to the book is that the movie runs almost 3 hours long.

In terms of casting, the film did an excellent job of matching the book’s character descriptions in both physical and emotional aspects. Tris, played by ‘Spectacular Now’ star, Shailene Woodley, has incredible chemistry with her love interest, Four, played by Theo James.

But as is the case with most book adapted movies, some details that were addressed in the novel were left out of the movie. Those who saw the movie without reading the books first still didn’t have any trouble following the plot or find it necessary to read the trilogy.

Woodley’s presence on screen exceeds any expectations people had of her. She brings a passionate, spirited attitude derived of her own personal character.

In terms of special effects and CG, they succeeded in implementing the futuristic dystopian style without the usual cheesiness that is normally inevitable with something of that nature. I would definitely recommend seeing this movie for action, suspense, and romance.
