Concerned students make a splash with protests

On Jan. 21, the Middletown High School Boys and Girls Swimming and Diving teams organized a protest in front of 115 East Church St. regarding the possible closing of school pools throughout the county.

Due to budget cuts, the Board of Education had to consider shutting down swimming and diving programs throughout Frederick County in order to save money.

“A lot of swimmers are one-sport athletes, so without high school teams, swimming club is their only option,” said Robin Conley, MHS senior and captain of the Girls Swim Team.

A final decision concerning the pools was made the day of the protest and the verdict was to keep the Swimming and Diving programs.

“None of us ever wanted to cut swimming. We just couldn’t figure out how to make up for the shortfalls,” said Jean Smith, member of the Board of Education.

The question is what will have to be done in order to remain in budget. A Board of Education meeting on the subject of the budget will take place in late May.
