The Knights knew they couldn’t lose to Walkersville. Especially after a disappointing loss to Linganore, but this was Walkersville- this would be the fourth straight loss against the rival Lions.

“Getting a win was very important because we needed to get our momentum back,” said Knights senior, Brad Rinehart.

With seven minutes left it seemed like the Knights were headed down the path of heartbreak yet again. The Lions had been draining threes all game, but a three from Brooks Kinna giving the Lions a ten point lead with 7:02 left appeared to be a dagger in the Knights heart.

“It all came down to heart in the fourth,” said Rinehart. “The referees were letting us play so we took advantage of it.”

The dormant Knights offense exploded from that point on, finishing the game on a 21-2 run to come back to Middletown with a, 58-49, victory.

Rinehart had been struggling from the field, shooting 0-7 in the first half. He took over in the fourth quarter, finishing with 16 points- eight during the fourth quarter.

“We played physical and hard,” said Rinehart. “We just completely outworked them in the fourth.”

MHS sophomore, Matt Considine finished with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Considine showed off his prowess from downtown and his game in the paint during the third and early fourth quarter keeping the Knights within striking distance.

The Knights displayed a defensive intensity that hasn’t been seen thus far this season. MHS senior Tim Schumacher recorded an incomprehensible ten steals. The Knights forced 22 turnovers from the Lions, eight in the fourth quarter.

“We have a lot have confidence heading to Catoctin Thursday,” said Rinehart.

The Knights still have four of their next five games on the road, with a showdown against Thomas Johnson on Feb. 7 for senior night coming at home.

The Knights will head to Catoctin (2-14) on Feb. 6 to face the Cougars in what can be classified as a must win for the Knights as they try for a seed in the 2A West.

No matter what happens the rest of the season for the Knights (9-8), a win against the Lions was a priority heading into the season. Mission accomplished.

“Being a senior, and knowing you may not get to play [Walkersville] again, and beat them on their home turf,” said Rinehart. “It couldn’t have turned out any better.”
