Miss America serves in Frederick

Every year, there is a day of service across the country called “Miss America Serves Day.” This day is filled with service in all 50 states, doing whatever needs to be done to make the community a better place.

Miss America Serves 2017 was held on Saturday, April 8, and every titleholder in the state of Maryland went to the Frederick Community Action Agency to volunteer. The titleholders performed multiple tasks throughout the day, all to help make the agency and the building it inhabits a better place.

The Miss America organization is a pageant; however, it is much more than that. It has a higher emphasis on scholarships instead of beauty.

The four points of the crown, scholarship, style, service and success, are what every titleholder exhibits.

For service, this program is a great way for every titleholder in the Miss America organization to go out into their community and do service work at their designated location.

In order to participate, each contestant was required to raise 100 dollars toward the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, who partners with The Miss America organization.

The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals not only raises funds but also awareness for hospitals and helps to treat children all across the country, giving them hope.

The goal for Maryland was set at 5,000 dollars, however when it was all finished, a total of 8,370 dollars was raised.

“I enjoyed just getting a sense that we were doing something for the community and making a difference because essentially that’s what Miss America’s about,” said Kendal Neel, MHS junior and Miss Western Maryland’s Outstanding Teen.

Neel will compete for the title of Miss Maryland’s Outstanding Teen this June.

When asked about the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, Neel only had good things to say.

“Yeah, I think it’s awesome. Ever since I became involved in the organization, the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital has become a big focus for me and it has been a big part of all of my community service.”

This program, though so simple, has such a big impact around the country and helps make it a better place.
