Yesterday, MHS had its 2012 Mock Election. I would first like to thank Mrs. Devine and the administration for allowing the staff and students to hold this election. With Hurricane Sandy, much of the preparation had to be done at the last minute. I would especially like to thank the teachers during this busy time of year for taking the time to allow their students to participate. Only 3 teachers out of 40 were unable to participate in the election yesterday, and that is impressive. Thank  you teachers.

I would also like to thank Mr. Malafarina and his SAGA club members Alejandra Diaz, Max Trevor, and Ashlynn Miller, as well as Jason Spiegel, for staying until 5 pm to count and organize the ballots.

The ballots you filled out yesterday were exactly how the ballots will look this year in the state of Maryland.

In 2008, MHS voted overwhelmingly for Obama with 51%, to McCain’s 39 %. This year’s election went a little differently.

Out of 880 votes tallied, Republican Ken Timmerman defeated Chris Van Hollen for the 8th District of the U.S. House of Representatives, 44% – 34%,

Republican John Bongino defeated Democrat Ben Cardin for the Maryland Senate seat, 42% to 32%.

And Mitt Romney defeated Barack Obama 47% to 42%.

Interestingly, although it was a Republican sweep here at MHS for the high positions of government, the student body leaned a little more liberal on the social issues.

Question 4, Maryland’s Dream Act, passed 56% to 38%,
Question 5 approving Maryland’s redistricting map was approved 62% to 25%,
Question 6 allowing gay marriage in Maryland passed 58% to 33%,
And Question 7 allowing table gambling in Maryland passed 53% to 36%.

Thank you again for all of those that made yesterday’s mock election possible, including Diane Cosgray and the PTSA. And students, when you turn 18, please make sure you take part in the democratic process that people in northern Africa and the Middle East are literally dying to have. Get out there and vote. Your vote does make a difference.
