A fashion-filled night…or not

On Feb. 22, America’s sweethearts and golden boys graced the red carpet in Los Angeles for the 81st annual Academy Awards. While it is true that the purpose of the show is to recognize extraordinarily talented people for making us laugh, cry and smile throughout this year’s movies, every true fan of the Oscars tune in for the fashion.

In this week’s blog, I will take you through my top ten favorite hits/misses of the night, offering my opinions and thoughts, which I realize are not very highly valued in Hollywood. Hopefully, the folks of Middletown will think differently.

Angelina Jolie- A Hollywood’s resident vixen showed up to the Oscars in a stunning black strapless Elie Saab gown. With a dramatic sweetheart neckline and volumized hair, not to mention near-perfect facial features, Jolie needed little to accessorize this dramatic ensemble. She chose to pair the dress with a bright emerald ring and matching earrings.

Miley Cyrus- F Disney’s princess arrived at the big show in an overwhelming Zuhair Murad piece, which basically made her look like an oversized Christmas tree.

Kate Winslet- A Recipient of the coveted Best Actress award that night, Winslet also received great fashion marks. Dressed in a silver, lacy one-shoulder Yves St. Laurent gown, Winslet made a dramatic statement. A sophisticated up-do and subtle make-up completed her look.

Mickey Rourke- F I have serious problems with this man’s attire. I mean, seriously, this is the Oscars. Would it kill him to put in a little effort? Dressed in a sloppy and tacky white and black tux, he accessorized with a pocket chain and lots of jewelry. Need I say more?

Beyonce- C This platinum record singer and actress arrived at the Academy Awards in a dress designed by her own label, the House of Dereon. I suggest she stick to acting and singing. Her black and gold dress, frayed out at the bottom like a mermaid’s tail, was too outrageous for this red carpet. She’s a beautiful woman and a simpler style would have suited her best.

Anne Hathaway- A+ My personal favorite look of the night, Anne Hathaway looked stunning in an ivory Armani dress, which was covered with actual crystals. She completed her look with a simple side-parted bun and dramatic red lips. Let me just say, I hope I look this good at prom. Even though she didn’t take home any awards, in my opinion she took home Best Dressed.

Jennifer Aniston – A As a huge “Friends” fan, I was super pumped to see what Jen would show up to for the big award show. I wasn’t disappointed, either. Jennifer wore a beautiful beaded, ivory/gold gown from Valentino. In conjunction with her everyday laid-back demeanor, she braided her bangs into a simple braid and let the rest lay loosly.

Heidi Klum – C The Project Runway host wore a strange Roland Mouret origami-inspired dress, which looked strange on her body. Paired with outrageous jewels and flat hair, her look was a little confusing. It just goes to show, you should always dress for your body type.

Hugh Jackman – A The host of the big night looked incredibly suave in a custom-made tuxedo. It clearly fit his body beautifully (see Klum comments above) and he paired it with a classic pair of Salvatore Ferragamo shoes. He did look a little orange, though…maybe he was hitting the tanning bed too hard.

Freida Pinto – B The star of the Best Picture movie “Slumdog Millionaire” was dressed in a beautiful royal blue John Galliano dress. I loved it because it truly represented Indian style and culture.
