The Round Table

Good luck, seniors

The seniors of Middletown High School are enjoying their last semester of school with most of the stress from college applications lifted and gone.  With a little over three months of high school left, seniors are starting to realize they will be leaving soon enough. The term “senioritis” is beginning to creep into their study habits, graduation parties are in the midsts of forming, senior week plans are being confirmed, and graduation is looming in their minds.

For me personally, and I’m sure others have the same opinion, “senioritis” is not an option with AP classes crowding my schedule. I mean, yes the temptation is there. Excuses such as “well, one homework assignment wont kill my grade,” “I just got too busy to study,” or “But I had to work last night,” are always tempting to me when I am up until eleven or twelve at night working on AP Psych homework.

But I know that in the end I will loose the battle and stay up as long as needed to finish the work for the class leading to a passing score on the AP test and getting the credit for college. Wouldn’t that be nice, no English 101 class if I pass AP Lang and Comp.

Then, of course, the talk of senior week is the most popular topic among many high school seniors. The usual spots are Ocean City, Myrtle Beach, Virginia Beach, really anyplace with an ocean view and a place to stay. Some will choose to be unique and different by going to places like New York and Disney World, and for those lucky enough, some will even go out of the country or go on a cruise as a senior week/graduation present.

Personally I have chosen to be different; a bunch of friends and I are going to New York and staying on an island on the St. Lawrence River in the thousand islands; we’re so excited! Senior week is a time to have fun with friends, enjoy no longer being in high school, and letting loose (hopefully not too loose, be safe.)

Finally, the biggest thing on a seniors mind is graduation. It’s coming so fast; the senior clock is ticking down and time is running out. Cap and gowns are ordered, senior pictures have been chosen, class rings are being delivered, senior interviews are being held and the seniors are feeling the time strain. Our last Winter Formal is right around the corner, AP tests are quickly approaching, then Prom, followed by graduation announcements being sent out, the senior picnic, graduation practices, and then through the finish line on graduation day. So as the last days of our senior year approach we must treasure our last days, or count down until we leave, whichever you prefer.

Good luck on the last months of our 2009 school year, seniors.
