The Round Table

Great action keeps fans coming back for more, despite dropped ratings

What would somebody do if all of the government’s top secrets were kept in his brain? Chuck Bartowski has to deal with this every day of his life. This thrilling, action-packed television series, Chuck, is on every Monday night from eight to nine.

The show revolves around the fact that the main character, Chuck, has the government’s secrets in his brain. The plot opened on Chuck’s birthday where he received an e-mail from an old college friend, Bryce Larkin, who, unbeknownst to Chuck, has become a rogue spy.

When Chuck opened the e-mail, a government supercomputer known as the Intersect was downloaded to his brain.  The actual computer had been destroyed hours before, so Chuck was the only person with all of that information. Chuck’s life was turned upside down, as he is on constant call to help out government agents sent to protect him.

The show had an average of 7.76 million viewers during its first season and has an average of 6.80 million viewers so far this season. This show is a drop of about a million viewers, which does not bode well for the series being renewed.

Although the show is teetering on the edge of cancellation, it seems many steps are being taken to save it. After the Super Bowl, there was a 3D promotion. The show comes on right before Heroes, which is a very popular show, so it could pick up a few extra viewers.

So far, the series deserves nine out of ten. All of the action, comedy, and interesting plot contribute to this. It helps to keep the viewer watching and waiting for more.

However, too many episodes follow the same formula. Most of the episodes deal with finding or being chased by criminals. This gets to be repetitive after a while and could turn some people off.

When the plot is changed, though, it really shows how great the show can be. Some of the better episodes were about a hostage situation. With all of the different personalities in the show together, this sub-story lasted over three episodes, which kept viewers watching to see how it resolved.

If the show can keep having different, interesting plots most of the time, it will earn better ratings and more viewers. Keeping the same storyline definitely will result in a loss of viewers and ratings so great that NBC will not want to hold on to it any longer.

If they do change the storyline and keep the great action, Chuck will become one of the shows to watch in the future.
