“Mall cop” leaves fans wanting more

“Paul Blart: Mall Cop” has made its way into theatres this winter, starring Kevin James (“King of Queens”). James plays a security guard in a mall who is hypoglycemic and takes his job as a security guard too seriously.

At the beginning of the movie I developed a liking to Paul, but as the story progressed, it became very boring and ridiculous.

The movie starts out with Paul trying to win the affection of a fellow employee at the mall. After the first quarter of the movie, the mall becomes overtaken by criminals whose aims aren’t really made clear in the movie.

Paul ends up being the only one in the mall to stop them; his mission to stop the crooks from taking credit card codes. This aspect is confusing to understand for younger viewers, as to why they need those codes.

The movie was produced by Kevin James, Adam Sandler (Mr. Deeds), and Barry Benardi. Sandler and James worked together in the comedy “I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry.”

James is a pretty funny comedian and ranked 89 out of Comedy Central’s top 100 comedians. In my opinion, however, this movie was not one of his best works, as it is directed towards kids and families.

James should just stick to stand-up comedy.

The soundtrack of the movie was pretty good because it contained various songs from the 80’s. Some might have never heard before, but would possibly take a liking to them as they play. Fans of 80’s rock would enjoy the soundtrack of this movie.

The criminals in the movie were riding skateboards and performing tricks around the mall, which may make some question whether they are watching a comedy movie, or a skateboarding/parkour movie. Later on in the movie when Paul’s daughter is captured by the crooks, the plot starts to become cheesy, because the whole “saving loved ones, and get revenge” storyline is kind of overused in most movies.

There were guns in the movie, as well, which is strange for a movie that is directed towards kids; to compensate for that, nobody was shot by a gun, but some parents may seem skeptical about the use of guns in a children’s movie.

The setting of the movie was the Burlington Mall in Burlington, Massachusetts. It was a good that the producers actually took the effort to have the film made in an actually mall, rather than one of those fake sets that they use in some movies. The ending of the movie was very cliché and very predictable, but I won’t spoil anything for those who actually want to see the movie.

To sum everything up, the movie did have some of its moments where one might start giggle up, and a good soundtrack of classic 80 songs, but the story kind of fell apart and was unclear as it progressed, I would not recommend people see this movie in theatres, but perhaps if it is released on DVD some may want to rent it to have a good laugh.
