Spring fever has arrived

Spring fever- noun, a feeling of restlessness, excitement, or laziness brought on by the coming of spring.

As winter finally starts to melt away and spring makes its way around the corner students at Middletown High School are preparing for the warm sun and hot weather. When the temperature goes up the ability for students to stay focused in class descends rapidly as the thought of summer approaching gets closer.

During the summer, days seem extended because the sun is out longer and there’s no school to take over almost seven hours for five days a week giving students more time to relax and enjoy the sunny weather with their friends and family.

“Although I don’t keep complete focus in class, I find ways to make sure I understand everything I’m learning in class,” said sophomore Cody Stroop.

It’s important that students stay focused with the arrival of summer quickly impending because grades matter a lot, even towards the end of the year. Many students, not just seniors, often suffer from not just Spring fever, but the dreaded “senioritis”; where students give little or no effort in class as the end of the year gets closer.

“All my classes feel faster paced, and it’s hard to keep focused knowing that the summer is so close, and that I’m going to graduate soon,” said senior Ellie Long.

Grades, especially during a student’s senior year matter a lot, because colleges pay special attention to how hard students work during their final year of high school.

“I keep focused knowing that I still have AP (advanced placement) exams and finals to take at the end of the year, and I need to do well on those so I keep focused and study,” said junior Matthew Sweeney.

Even sites like collegeboard.com know of the dreaded “senioritis” and how it affects students who slack off during their spring classes. “Every year, colleges rescind offers of admission, put students on academic probation, or alter financial aid packages as a result of “senioritis.”

“I know I still need to work hard when I think about how fun senior week is going to be, I know that I have to graduate to participate in it,” said senior Scott Bradley.

The main point is that no matter what the weathers like, students need to keep focused, stay energized, and work hard to stay on the top of their game and keep their grades high.
