Congratulations to the following students for their accomplishments at the Frederick County Science and Engineering Fair. Mackensie Smith received first place for her project, first place in the Non-Mentored Projects, the NIST Sigma Xi Measurement Science Award and an award from the United States Air Force.

Alexis Ramsey received first place for her project and also received an award from the United States Army. Ariel Ford received honorable mention. Nick Carter received second place for his project, an award from the United States Army, and the thirteenth annual Dr. Raymond Ediger Award for excellence in agriculture. Fredericka Rentzeperis, Erin Chambers, and Colin Fields also earned first place for their project. Thanks to all science department members who encouraged students to participate in the science fair!

Forty years ago, in 1974, some students at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio gathered on campus with an idea to have something like a science fair, but for history fans, and called it National History Day. By 1980, it expanded from Ohio to other Midwestern states, and by 1992 moved its headquarters from Cleveland to Washington D.C. The National History Day organization was even awarded the prestigious National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama at a White House ceremony in 2011.

Each year, there is a different topic that students must present. This year’s topic is “Turning Points in History; People, Ideas, and Events”. What does this have to do with Middletown, you ask? Well we just happen to be home to this year’s First Place winner in the Senior Paper competition for Frederick County, Laura Howard. Her paper, cleverly titled, “From the Ironing Board to the Executive Board: Changes in the Chronology of Women” won Laura the gold medal and a trip to the State competition at UMBC next month to compete with six hundred other students from across the state, and a chance to go to Nationals. Here to present her award is our assistant principal Mrs. Jeffrey.
