Football: Will Rice’s mock draft

Pick 1 Houston Texans:  South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney

While the Texans need a QB, Clowney is a rare athlete who will provide more fresh blood to the D-line.  The possibility of having both J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney as a DE tangent is just frightening.  The duo will terrorize offensive lines, running backs, and quarterbacks for a long time.  While some people question Clowney’s motor and work ethic, veteran DE J.J. Watt will push Clowney to do better. Losing defensive end Antonio Smith will be a huge reason to take Jadeveon Clowney.

Pick 2 St. Louis Rams: Auburn OT Greg Robinson

Greg Robinson is a hardnosed run blocker who has huge potential to get better.  Robinson is very smart and shows the ability to learn quickly.  While his pass blocking isn’t the best, it will definitely get better.

Pick 3 Jacksonville Jaguars: Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel

With the arrival of offensive playmakers such as running back Toby Gerhart to help take the place of Maurice Jones-Drew, and guard Zane Beadles, Jacksonville needs a QB who can lead them and make plays.  Manziel is a tough kid who can throw and run.  While his attitude isn’t the best, his play making ability is up there.  With proper coaching, his attitude will get better, and will give the Jaguars a chance to put points on the board against conference rivals who have tremendous defenses. The Jaguars hope that Manziel will be able to avoid all the suspensions that Justin Blackmon hasn’t been able to.

Pick 4 Cleveland Browns: Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater

With Johnny Manziel off the board, the Browns will choose Teddy Bridgewater as their signal caller.  Bridgewater has been called the most developed QB in the draft, and has the potential to help revive a dying Browns team.  While his lack of bulk is a little concerning, he can make quick throws to almost anywhere on the field.

Pick 5 Oakland Raiders: Clemson WR Sammy Watkins

Easily the most athletic, and the best WR in the draft this year, Sammy Watkins brings a triple threat as a runner, receiver, and a returner.  He is a tough kid who brings amazing speed to the field.  He has great hands and can make amazing catches anywhere on the field.  While the main concern should be quarterback, this draft is the deepest yet.  A good QB will be available later in the draft.

Pick 6 Atlanta Falcons: North Carolina TE Eric Ebron

The Falcons need a great tight end who can replace Tony Gonzalez.  Eric Ebron is extremely fast, and has good hands.  Not only has he put on some bulk, but he has also proven that he is very effective in catching passes, especially down the field.  He has the speed to get past linebackers and catch smaller safeties off guard.  Ebron is also durable and will prove a huge target for Matt Ryan, as well as a valuable piece in the Falcons struggling offense.

Pick 7 Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Texas A&M OT Jake Matthews

The Buccaneers need to start building around Mike Glennon and Doug Martin.  Jake Matthews is a well-respected leader, who is hard working and is a proven winner.  He has great form and strength.  While some people question his ability to get better, he is very smart and is easily one of the top tackles in the draft.  Tampa Bay will be getting a great player who can take charge of the O-Line and help protect Mike Glennon.

Pick 8 Minnesota Vikings: QB UCF Blake Bortles

Minnesota needs a quarterback who can lead them.  Christian Ponder isn’t able to lead very well, and is just a “hand-off QB”.  The Vikings got Josh Freeman from the Buccaneers, but he turned out to be a bust.  Blake Bortles is a big, old school kind of quarterback.  He is very tall and is able to sit in the pocket and deliver the ball.  He has good but not great arm strength and can put the deep down the field.  While a top quarterback, Bortles isn’t the best in the draft.  Despite that, he is a huge improvement from Freeman or Ponder.

Pick 9 Buffalo Bills: Buffalo OLB Khalil Mack

Buffalo needs an edge rusher to pair up with Mario Williams.  Khalil Mack is a tremendous athlete with good speed, strength, and awareness.  Mack has a motor that never seems to stop, and has a knack for finding the quarterback.  Mack has a jarring hit the knocks ball carriers out and forces the ball lose.  Mack is easily the best linebacker in the draft and the Bills will be keeping Mack in Buffalo.

Pick 10 Detroit Lions: Texas A&M WR Mike Evans

The Lions need a wide receiver that can draw attention away from Calvin Johnson and take pressure off of him.  Mike Evans is the most “Calvin-like” receiver in the draft.  Standing at 6’5” and weighing 231 pounds, Mike Evans is a big receiver who is a lot like Calvin Johnson.  With two big receivers who can jump up and rip the ball out of the air, The Lions will be a huge threat on offense.

Pick 11 Tennessee Titans: Fresno State QB Derek Carr

The Titans have a lot of question marks at a lot of positions.  The biggest might be quarterback.  With Jake Locker constantly getting hurt and not playing up to expectations, Tennessee will be on the hunt for a new QB.  Derek Carr has surprised scouts with how well he can lead a team.  He has a big arm, with the ability to fit the ball into the tiniest window, just about anywhere on the field.  He has some ability to take off and run it if he needs to, and he is a hard worker.  Derek Carr will be a big improvement for the Titans.

Pick 12 New York Giants: Oklahoma St. CB Justin Gilbert

The Giants defensive backfield has been struggling for a few seasons now, and it’s time for an upgrade.  Justin Gilbert is the best defensive back in the draft, and with good reason.  He is a big bodied corner, who has amazing speed, and big hands.  He can catch the ball, and forces interceptions.  He has great hand-eye coordination, and has the ability to return the ball both on interceptions, and on kick returns.

Pick 13 St. Louis Rams: USC WR Marquise Lee

With their second pick of the first round, the Rams will still be building around QB Sam Bradford.  With an almost Tavon Austin like build, Marquise Lee fits the kind of receiver that the Rams like.  Lee is fast, an excellent route runner, and can track where the ball is deep down the field.  He has the ability to make extra yards happen after the catch and can manipulate defensive backs.  He is also a tremendous returner.

Pick 14 Chicago Bears: Florida St. DT Timmy Jernigan

With Julius Peppers getting older and older, the Bears need to improve their D-Line.  Timmy Jernigan is a faster defensive tackle who can stuff the gap and take down the ball carrier.  While he is undersized, he has amazing effort and can pursue the ball carrier well.  He has great footwork and can change directions well.  He is a great player to use a replacement for Julius Peppers.

Pick 15 Pittsburgh Steelers: Michigan OT Taylor Lewan

With an almost completely dead rushing attack, and with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger getting older, and more easily injured, the Steelers need to improve on a very old offensive line.  They have missed amazing offensive tackles in the past few drafts, so now is the time to take one.  Taylor Lewan is a tall lineman who has great balance and footwork.  Lewan is a good pass blocker who is quick to attack linebackers on the run.  He can stop quicker rushers and has huge hands.

Pick 16 Dallas Cowboys: Alabama FS Ha Ha Clinton-Dix

The Cowboys have been missing a good safety for years, and this is the year that they get one.  With Demarcus Ware gone, they need a new leader on defense.  Ha Ha Clinton-Dix is an excellent run supporter who has good size and length and has good speed.  Clinton-Dix is also flexible enough to cover slot receivers and tight ends deep down the field.  He is also an amazing tackler and hammers runners.  He has big nine inch hands which allow him to easily pick the ball off.

Pick 17 Baltimore Ravens: LSU WR Odell Beckham

The Ravens could use a new target to help out Joe Flacco and to take pressure off of WR Torrey Smith, and TE Dennis Pitta.  Beckham is quick, shifty and is able to create extra yards after a catch.  He has big ten inch hands which helps him hang on to the ball.  He is able to slip out of jams by corners, and has return experience.  Beckham will be a good back up for Smith.

Pick 18 New York Jets: Penn State WR Allen Robinson

The Jets need a target to help out Geno Smith.  Even though the Jets signed Eric Decker, they need a stockpile of receivers to help take the place of Santonio Homes.  While Robinson doesn’t have the best speed, he can make plays in the air, and can defeat press coverage.  He works back to the ball and has excellent size.  New York will be getting a surprise playmaker here.

Pick 19 Miami Dolphins: Notre Dame OT Zack Martin

With the bullying scandal destroying the Miami locker room, and three offensive linemen leaving Miami, the Dolphins need to take a productive offensive lineman with this pick.  Martin is a very flexible lineman who is light on his feet and engages quickly.  He is a hard working leader who is well respected and leads by example.  Martin is athletic enough to pull and trap defenders, and is well aware to blitzes.

Pick 20 Arizona Cardinals: Michigan St. CB Darqueze Dennard

Arizona would love to get a cornerback to help out Patrick Peterson, and Dennard fits the bill.  Dennard is fast, strong when playing press coverage, and can recognize routes very quickly.  He has good eyes, anticipation and reactive quickness.  He is an intense, hardworking leader who leads by example and plays with urgency.  Arizona is getting a good corner who will work hard to be the best.

Pick 21 Green Bay Packers: Alabama ILB C.J. Mosley

Green Bay’s defense hasn’t been the same since they won the Super Bowl in 2010.

They need an inside linebacker to help out Clay Matthews.  C.J. Mosley is a well-respected leader who has amazing urgency and instincts.  He can cover tight ends while covering a zone, or blanket speed backs in man coverage.  He has excellent balance and knee bend, and can jar the ball lose from ball carriers with explosive hits.

Pick 22 Philadelphia Eagles: Northern Illinois SS Jimmie Ward

Philadelphia has been slowly improving their defense over the past couple of years by taking both Demeco Ryans and Connor Barwin from the Texans.  They now need a safety to help their defense. Even with the big move to acquire free safety Malcom Jenkins in the free agency, it never hurts to have two disruptive safeties on the field.   Jimmie Ward flies all over the field and has quick hands to snatch the ball out of the air.  He has short-range burst to close on the ball.  He is energetic and confident.  He is an aggressive run supporter who chops down ball carriers.  The Eagles will have a much needed improvement to their defense with this pick.

Pick 23 Kansas City Chiefs: Oregon St. WR Brandin Cook

Andy Reid loves wide receivers that can stretch the field, and providing Alex Smith a new target would prove helpful. With the loss of Dexter McCluster, who proved he could make an impact not only as a returner, but as a receiver as well, the Chiefs need to take a receiver here. While shorter than most wide outs, Cook shows excellent speed, balance and hand quickness.  Cook is very aware of the boundary, and can make a short gain into a big play.  Cook is extremely durable, which will give the Chiefs a reliable wide out for many years to come.  Terrific body control and is not afraid to play against much bigger corners.  Cook is a good wide out who will prove helpful for the chiefs.

Pick 24 Cincinnati Bengals: TCU CB Jason Verrett

The Bengals have dominate pass rushers on defense that are led by Geno Atkins.  Cincinnati needs a corner to help out a struggling secondary.  Verrett has great instincts and makes amazing plays on the ball.  Good speed and is willing to play in run support.   Verrett is very athletic and feisty with great footwork.  The Bengals will be getting an upgrade to a struggling secondary.

Pick 25 San Diego Chargers: Ohio State CB Bradley Roby

San Diego did a lot better this past season, but needs help in the defensive backfield.  Bradley Roby is an aggressive hard working corner who has good footwork and quick feet.  He is an aggressive tackler who can also be a dangerous blitzer and kick blocker.  He is very competitive and can change directions very easily.  He has the ability to shadow slot receivers.

Pick 26 Cleveland Browns: Ohio State HB Carlos Hyde

With their second pick of the first round, the Browns will need to take a running back.  They traded away their former first round pick at running back Trent Richardson, and now need a replacement.  Carlos Hyde is a very aggressive runner who is very well built and has a ton of explosive power.  Hyde punishes linebackers and runs through defenders.  He almost always falls forward and is a good pass blocker.  He is aware to the pass rush and can hold his own against the blitz.  He is a very vocal leader who can rally a team.

Pick 27 New Orleans Saints: Auburn DE Dee Ford

With the Saints cleaning house and cutting several veteran defensive players, they need to get a player who will lead their defense back to greatness.  Ford plays with urgency and effort.  He is respected and has a tremendous work ethic.  Ford works his way to the quarterback and beats blockers off the ball with quick acceleration and burst.  He is good at anticipating the snap.  The Saints will be getting a tempo setting defensive end that can help lead them back to greatness.

Pick 28 Carolina Panthers: Virginia OT Morgan Moses

The Panthers looked great this year.  Their defense stepped up, and Cam Newton played better.  With Jordan Gross retiring, they need a tackle that can step up and help protect Newton.  While Moses needs to learn how to shift his weight better, and not bend at the waist, he is big, and aggressive.  He is tall and has long arms and can pull with intensity.  He has active hands that keep moving.

Pick 29 New England Patriots: Texas Tech TE Jace Amaro

While Rob Gronkowski was out a good chunk of the season, the Patriots were busy looking like the Browns.  The Patriots learned that they can’t depend just on their new rookie wide receivers to pick up the slack, should Gronkowski go down again.  Jace Amaro is a tough, durable tight end who has good size, and amazing hands.  He can stretch the field and make a catch anywhere on the field.  Amaro also fights for every yard he gets.  He is very physical and does a good job sealing the edge as run blocker.

Pick 30 San Francisco 49ers: Notre Dame DE Stephon Tuitt

The 49ers have been busy so far into the Free Agency period.  They have acquired both tackle Johnathan Martin, and quarterback Blain Gabbert.  They need to get a defensive lineman who can help out Aldon Smith and the aging Justin Smith.  Tuitt is a physical, versatile defensive player who can play either tackle or end in both an even or odd front.  He has long arms, and has great body control for his size.  Tuitt is very disruptive and will be a big boost for the 49ers.

Pick 31 Denver Broncos: Connecticut ILB Yawin Smallwood

With the addition of free agents Aqib Talib and T.J. Ward, Denver’s defensive backfield is looking like it will be one of the best.  Talib and Ward will help take the place of the legendary corner Champ Bailey.  While Denver’s offense is in need of very little tweaking, their defense needs a huge overhaul.  The Broncos now have the one of the most bone chilling defenses in the NFL right now with the addition of Demarcus Ware.  The Broncos are looking like the team to beat.  Von Miller and Demarcus Ware could use help on the interior and Smallwood can do it.  Though Smallwood isn’t a big name prospect, but he makes sense here.  He is a versatile backer who can play both inside and outside, and he fits into the Broncos 4-3 scheme.  Smallwood has terrific instincts and awareness, and will be pushed to get better by veteran presence in both Miller and Ware.

Pick 32 Seattle Seahawks: UCLA G Xavier Su’a-Filo

The Seahawks showed people that they can run the ball.  As good as Marshawn Lynch is, no running back can do good without the big boys upfront.  Seattle needs a guard who can help block for Lynch.  Su’a-Filo is good at both run and pass blocking.  He is quick off the ball and has good footwork.  He can create movement and is versatile.  He knows how to pull, trap, combo block, and can work his way to the second level.
