Football: Knights look to continue home opener winning streak versus Warriors

The Middletown High School Knights Varsity Football team will kick off their home schedule at 7 P.M. tonight against the Boonsboro High School Warriors.

The Knights (2-0) are coming off their biggest win since 2005, a 62-0 demolishing of the Winters Mill High School Falcons.

The Knights used quick scores to knock the Falcons out of the game putting up 35 points in the second quarter alone and 48 points in the first half allowing the second and third team players to come in the game and get valuable experience.

The Knights racked up 351 yards on offense compared to a measly 116 yards for the Falcons, with 304 of the Knights yards coming on the strength of the eight Knights running backs that got to see game action.

The win was a historic one for the Knights marking the first time they had scored 60+ points since MHS head coach Kevin Lynott had became head coach at Middletown in 2008.

Another historic point for the Knights was the win against Winters Mill extended their win streak to 24, also extending the school record to 24, as they will with each new win.

The defense also came up big for the Knights causing four turnovers with three of those turnovers coming by way of the interception with one of those being returned for a touchdown.

On the season the Knights have dominated in almost every statistical category there is, outscoring opponents 81-14, outrushing opponents 531 to -13, and forcing seven turnovers to the no turnovers that their opponents have forced.

The one category that the Knights are not leading in, passing yards, is the one the Warriors will look to exploit against a defense for the Knights that has given up 458 yards through the air.

The Warriors (2-0) are coming off back-to-back wins, beating Walkersville High School Lions in Week 1 25-15 and then taking down the Francis Scott Key High School Eagles 36-13.

The Warriors are coming off one of their best seasons in school going 8-2 during the regular season and making it to the playoffs for the first time since 2006.

The Warriors made it all the way to the 1A West Regional Semifinal, where they were beaten by the Brunswick High School Railroaders.

The Warriors are led into this game by Warriors senior running back Ethan Foster and are hoping to clean up from last week’s game against the Eagles which saw them have good offensive ability but also struggle with penalties putting a strain on their offense.

This is the first time the Knights have played the Warriors since Week 3 of the 2010 season, a game in which the Knights dominated the warriors 34-0.

That game saw the Knights rush for 224 yards, with MHS running back Sam Michels rushing for 121 yards on 22 carries.

The last time Boonsboro come to the friendly confines of Knights High School at Middletown high School was back in 2009 in Week 3, in a game that was also the home opener for the Knights.

In that game the Knights edged held off a Warrior rally, to beat Boonsboro 30-25.

Tonight is the Knights home opener, and they will look to continue a 4 game win streak during home openers.

The last time the Knights lost at a home opener was back in 2006 as the Knights of MHS were taken down by the Knights of Century High School 21-7.

Tonight’s game could be a playoff preview if both teams continue the form they are on, as Boonsboro has moved up to 2A West this year.

The Warriors are second in the 2A West points standings having accumulated 14 points over the first two games, while the Knights are just behind in third place with 13 points.
