The morning that everything changed started like any other. I was awoken by Sebastian. He was a demon who was my guard, but he was also my best friend. He woke me up by throwing a pillow into my face as I slept. As I sat up, I leaned over to reach for my blindfold, which sat on the nightstand right next to my bed. I was able to grab it and I slowly tied it to my face. It was a little too slow for Sebastian though, for he decided to take it upon himself to tie it to my face.
One second it was dark and the next it was slightly colored; I could see the world around me through the blur of the blindfold. Well less of the world and more of my room. I could see Sebastian’s silhouette leaning against the bookshelf watching me, making sure everything was going okay. Sebastian was tall, and always seemed to be covered in a deep purple blur, which probably was his armor. Sebastian is like me in a way, but instead of being blind, he is unable to speak, so he uses an enchanted book to speak, just like how I use my blindfold to see.
When Sebastian noticed that I was fully up he handed me his book, so I could read it. I opened the book, The book and my blindfold had a connection, to where the words appeared clear to me. I read to myself “Get up, get yourself ready, or I’ll hit you with another pillow!” I looked at his silhouette and sighed.
As I handed the book back to him, I spoke tiredly to him, “Really, the pillow threat again?” another sigh escaped me. I slowly started to slip out of bed, and as my feet hit the cold floor, I could feel the hard stone underneath them. I gestured for Sebastian to leave, he bowed and then left, closing the door behind him.
After a little while of getting ready, I exited my room. I wore a pair of brown hiking boots, black pants, an off white colored button-down shirt with a creamy coffee colored vest over it. As I left my room, I saw Sebastian crouching over petting an orange, black, and white colored shape that was close to the ground. The shape noticed me as I exited my room, it moved over to me and rubbed its head against my leg, I crouched down. and pet the top of its head.
“Good morning, Mittens, how are you?” a soft meow left the shape.
The book buzzed once more, He handed it over, “I don’t want to interrupt but shall we leave?” I nodded in response as I started down the stairs, Sebastian followed, with Mittens right behind us. Before we left the house, I quickly grabbed my bow and quiver. I was taught the skills of the bow when I was just about the age of seven because anything could happen, and I needed to know how to protect myself. I usually do not have to worry though, because I have Sebastian to protect me.
Our walk over to the center of town was quiet, with the occasional “Hi” or “Hello,” from the occasional early-bird townsfolk. But other than that, it was quite pleasant. As we reached the center of town, where we walked across the wood bridge that led to my throne, the blue blur from the banners that surrounded seemed to be blowing in the slight cavern breeze.
We walked the steps up to where the throne lay with a light brown podium blur nearby it. There were candles lit for the dead that have long since passed on, to the sides of the stairs leading up towards the throne. A white figure, The Priestess, stood near the throne waiting for our arrival. She seemed to watch as we walked up the steps.
“Your late arrival is not appreciated, your majesty. But good morning, sir. And good morning to you, Imp.” the Priestess spat. I could hear the shift in Sebastian’s armor as he moved his hand over his sword preparing to draw. He gets very triggered by these types of insults. Demons are supposed to be normal citizens like everyone else, it is just some people do not trust them enough, so they are very discriminated against.
“Good morning to you as well, I will remind you again he does not like being called an imp, so please stop calling him that. ‘Cause next time I will not stop him.” I reminded her, as I sat down on the dark blur of my throne, “If you would please ring the morning bell, I think it’s time for the town to be awoken.”
She slowly walked over to the bell and rang it; loud dongs came from the area of the bell. Let us start this new day, I thought to myself as I leaned back, listening to the sounds of the city. When the ringing from the bell became quieter and slower, I began to hear the echoes of the city markets and the school all around the cavern. After a few moments the city was bustling with all sorts of sounds that could be heard, you could hear the forge start up as the miners started their day’s work, and the blacksmiths starting to pound their hammers onto the molten metal and anvils.
As the City started to become alive, I listened to the sounds around me, and as I did, I started to pass out again, after a while I had fallen asleep.
I was asleep for quite a while till I was shaken. I opened my eyes to see I was sitting where I sat before, but there was a weird difference to the city that surrounded, it was covered in a glowing vine-like blur. The one thing that stood out to me the most was the fact that the Priestess, nor Sebastian were in sight. Instead, a cloaked, masked figure stood over me, they put their hand on my shoulder and tried to speak to me, but their words did not come out.
Then there was a glow coming from the ground as the earth that surrounded began to shake, a dark hole opened behind the figure and a great big creature came crawling out of it, and it roared. Loud enough to startle me awake.
My eyes flew open to see Sebastian’s silhouette, looming by my side, Looking down at me. I could not tell what expression he carried on his face. But I knew that he was concerned. I looked around to see if there was anything, but I spotted nothing. What an odd dream, wait someone is missing, where is she? I thought to myself as I sat up looking around.
“Where did the Priestess go?” I asked with slight concern.
Sebastian replied, using the book, “She said she was needed somewhere else, and then left without saying another word.”
I nodded in reply, of course she left, there is no way she would stick around, with Sebastian here. I slowly got up. Looked around once more, spotting nothing out of the ordinary. Nothing, it was just a dream, but who was that person? Never mind, let us just see what is on the agenda for today. I turned towards Sebastian and asked, “So anyways what is there to do today?”
The book buzzed, I investigated it and saw a list, “You have a meeting with the councilmembers, you also have to go to the new tavern that’s been taken over and I believe you have to check in on the markets, but that’s not always needed, Oh, and your uncle wanted you to come by the mines.”
I sighed, so much to do. Then said, “Sounds like a lot has got to be done today.”
He nodded, but just before we could start down the stairs, a shadowy figure swooped out of the shadows, the figure almost sounded like they were spatting some sort of nonsense.
Then the figure stopped speaking nonsense, What in the world? I thought to myself as they began to speak in a clearer voice. “There will always be greater powers than you, Child King…” the figure stood in one place, as an object flickered in the light. Sebastian seemed to have drawn his sword to this, I stepped behind Sebastian readying my bow, pulling an arrow out of the quiver, and attaching it to the bowstring. As I drew the string back, I listened, waiting to hear movement from either one of them.
The figure continued to say, “And that greater power will rise, and it will be the end of you.” and with that the figure seemed to lunge forward toward me, I felt the wind around me shift quickly. As Sebastian seemed to grab them and slam them into the ground hard enough to kill them and leave a dent in the ground below.
How I knew the figure was dead was when I heard them draw their last breath, and when Sebastian stood back up to survey the area that was surrounded us, seeing if there was anyone else nearby. As I relaxed, I began detaching the arrow from the bowstring. I gagged to myself, as the smell of copper mixed with a bit of iron, filled the air, I have never liked the smell of blood. I walked away from the corpse that lied in front of me, and I went to go sit on the stairs, but I could still smell the blood. I tried to block it out as I calmed my nerves, taking a deep breath, then letting out a sigh.
Sebastian had gotten one of the other guards to call some of the other guards over to help clean up the body, and with that the body was taken away for inspection. Sebastian came over, sitting next to me and placed a hand on my shoulder.
