On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice was declared to end the hostilities of the First World War, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning in 1919, November 11th was officially recognized as Armistice Day by Congress in 1926 and became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938.  The 1940’s witnessed the largest mobilization of the US military in history followed shortly thereafter in the 1950’s by the Korean War.  In 1954, at the urging of veterans groups, Congress changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day, a holiday that pays tribute to all American veterans–living or dead–but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.  Today the United States has more than 21 million living veterans.  Please take a moment to remember all veterans who have served and who are currently serving in our nation’s military.
