Ms. Loughry and Mr. Thomas were both honored at a luncheon on Friday, Nov. 13 at the University of Maryland as part of the Merrill Presidential Scholars Program.  The Merrill Presidential Scholars Program celebrates the University of Maryland’s most successful seniors and their designated University faculty and K-12 teachers for their mentorship in a special ceremony, building a community of scholars, faculty members, and K-12 teachers who recognize and celebrate the importance of teaching and mentoring the next generation.  Tommy Voracek and Ryan Chow, both 2013 MHS graduates and 2015 UMD recipients of the Merrill Presidential Scholars award, designated Ms. Loughry and Mr. Thomas for this prestigious honor as mentors who had a positive impact on their social and academic lives.   So that the legacy of academic excellence, teaching, and mentoring continues, the University of Maryland will award scholarships in Ms. Loughry and Mr. Thomas’ names to two 2016 Middletown High School graduates who plan to attend the UMD in the fall of 2016.
