Materialism exposed in satirical comedy

Although it has been said that money can’t buy happiness, the stubbornness of the modern youth would beg to differ. Being on the outside of the “fame circle,” wealth and popularity may seem like the ultimate goal in life. The truth is the benefits that come with wealth are outweighed by the negatives that accompany it.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring is a thrilling movie that’s based on true events reflecting the glamorous life of fame and wealth that settles in Hollywood. Each member of the “Bling Ring” is appropriately portrayed by actors who play teens that are materialistically obsessed with the luxurious lives’ of celebrities. When their egotistical habits spin out of control, they are faced with the reality of the crimes they have committed, and the severity that their actions have caused.

The movie is based on true events that took place in Hollywood in October 2008 through August 2009. The Bling Ring, also referred to as the Hollywood Hills Buglar Bunch, stole from over 25 houses, resulting in an estimated $3 million dollars in cash and in stolen property. Throughout the movie, the teens stole from expensive sports cars, vacation homes, and enormous mansions. Paris Hilton, Audrina Patridge, Rachel Bilson, Megan Fox, and Lindsay Lohan were all victims of the Bling Ring, and were all featured in the movie.

Although some parts of the movie seem to lack action, the movie clearly depicts the troubled lives of teens who struggle with greed, drugs, and the unrealistic party life.

The Bling Ring does have an official soundtrack which includes 9 piece (feat. Lil Wayne) by Rick Ross, 212 (feat. Lazy Jay) by Azealia Banks, Bad Girls by M.I.A., All of The Lights by Kanye West, and many more popular hip-hop songs. These songs set the mood for the events that are happening in the movie – from snorting cocaine in the car and smoking pot on the beach to partying in clubs and committing unforgivable crimes.

Today’s society has shaped the modern youth into believing that if you have money, you have everything. When all you ever wanted is in your grasp, how far will you go to get it?
