Middletown High School National English Honors Society cut out short poems, rolled up like scrolls and passed them around the school on Thursday April 21 to get others involved in National Poem In Your Pocket Day.

National poem In Your Pocket day began in 2002 when the office of the the Mayor along with the New York City Departments of Cultural Affairs and Education moved to get more people involved in National Poetry Month which is April.

The main reason for starting National Poem In your Pocket day had been to get people of all ages to write, share and use poetry as a way to express themselves during National Poetry Month.

In 2008, the Academy of American Poets took it upon themselves to encourage all 50 sates to participate and show off their inner poet.

MHS National English Honors Society students passed out some of their favorite short poems during the lunch shifts to others.

MHS National English Honors Society teacher Debra Leonard enjoyed having the students participate in something bigger than our school and “be able to show more of an appreciation and understanding” of all different poems and types of literature.

Leonard said she liked how the event had turned out this year. They ended up running out of poems after handing them all out to students and teachers around the school.
