Spring break is just the break we need

The last gap between the endless waves of five-day-week after five-day-week before the slow approaching summer vacation relieves students of their rushed early morning routines followed by agonizingly lengthy days here at Middletown High. It’s the thing implemented to keep students from going stir crazy in their cold, hard, plastic chairs as the days grow warmer and warmer, the sun’s rays streaming through the windows of the building, acting as a call to get out from under the harsh fluorescent lights. You guessed it; I’m talking about Spring Break.

Whether you’re going to a tropical oasis, a college visit or just plan to stay in bed watching an endless marathon of Game of Thrones, spring break is something that all students look forward to as we gear up for home stretch leading up to summer.

Not only is it a great way to catch up on some sleep, but it’s also a time for students to relax a little bit from the stress of getting all missing assignments in and studying harder than usual to get grades up before term three comes to a close.

This particular spring break, however, hasn’t been received all too well by some students. This winter, we’ve used more than five of the allotted snow days, meaning that the county can either take away spring break or add on some days to the school year.

The last part of that statement has been the kicker for most students as they would have preferred to have spring break taken away completely, as it was last year, than to lose more of our already shortened summer vacation. The shortened summer topic is something else to talk about entirely, and since the topic of this piece is spring break, that’s all I’m going to write about.

I think that a spring break is not only necessary but also pretty awesome. I understand that it cuts into our summer by a couple of days or so, but I know that a little split in the typical school routine is greatly appreciated. It’s just a nice time for students to recharge and prepare for the rest of the school year.

Despite all the negativity directed at spring break for taking off some days from summer, I think it’s a good thing that the Board of Education decided to keep it on the calendar. It’s a chance to unwind and then gear back up for the last leg of the year.
