White House Easter Egg Roll tradition is special

April 6 was the 137th annual Easter Egg Roll, with more than 35,000 people participating and celebrating the day’s events.

The warm and large public was greeted by First Lady Michelle Obama, President Barack Obama, the Easter bunny and both dogs, Bo and Sunny.

Similarly to previous years, the event took place in the back yard of the White House. With “The Star Spangled Banner” sung by Id4girls and 5th harmony, Michelle Obama celebrated the fifth anniversary of her “Lets Move!” program by singing the traditional Happy Birthday song. Both performances helped kick off this year’s Easter Egg Roll.

The first event was the famous “egg roll” with dozens of parents aiding their young ones to the finish line (aka rolling the egg for the child). The Obamas both greeted the participants at the finish line.

Following the egg roll was story time. Popular children’s books, including “The Giving Tree,” “Green Eggs and Ham,” and “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom,” were read aloud not only by  Obama and the First Lady, but also by guest stars Miles Brown, Marsai Martin and Sesame Street’s popular Cookie Monster.

Not only were there famous actors and actresses, but famous athletes were spotted at the Easter event. Washington’s own John Wall, a basketball player for the Wizards, and Calais Campbell, a football player for the Arizona Cardinals, were popular fixtures at the basketball court at the White House Easter event.

The annual Easter event was also celebrated alongside the First Lady’s “Let’s Move” program. The program is dedicated to solving childhood obesity with the ultimate goal of a healthier future for the current generation and those to come. Not only does the First Lady advocate it, but she participates in the program. During the easter event, she participated in a “Dance Off”  to Mark Ronson’s Uptown Funk. She expressed to the audience of 35,000 guests the importance of an active lifestyle with healthy eating habits.

At the end the public was encouraged to purchase “Keepsake Eggs.” Four feature the signatures of the President and First Lady, the fifth egg features “Bo and Sunny.

With another successful Easter Egg Roll, the tradition of hosting guests remains alive.
