Winter tips and tricks for looking great during the cold season

With fall upon us and winter just around the corner, it’s not easy to prevent the numerous side effects of harsh weather. However, by following some of these tips, you can keep your summer glow throughout the frosty seasons.

Along with snow, sleet and rain, winter can also bring split ends and dry, brittle hair. The harsh weather removes moisture from your hair, which can create a permanent bad hair day. To protect yourself from these effects, always cover your hair before going outside in cold weather. Preventative action can also be taken. Before bed, apply a deep-conditioning hair mask (product) to wet hair for about ten minutes. Rinse it out and wrap your hair in a silk scarf. In the morning, your hair will be more moisturized and capable of handling the dry weather.

The winter months can severely dry out your skin. On top of making it flaky and irritated, dry skin will diminish the perfect summer tan that took months to perfect. Moisturizing your skin is vital to warding off harsh winter effects. The key to moisturizing is balancing how much you use with how often you use. Moisturizing before bed is the best time; if you apply a moisturizer under make-up it will make your face appear shiny. Try Moisture White Night Treatment Cream at The Body Shop ($38.00). It contains Vitamin C to rejuvenate skin and Macadamia nut oil to moisturize.

During the holiday seasons when mistletoe is abundant, it’s important to keep your lips kissable and soft. Strong winds and frosty temperatures can burn and chap lips. Two steps can be taken to prevent this from happening: exfoliating and moisturizing. By exfoliating, you will remove dead skin that builds up on chapped lips. Moisturizing will keep them from chapping again. Try this at-home remedy: mix a half tablespoon of olive oil with two table spoons of brown sugar. Mix until it forms a paste and then apply to your lips. Afterwards, coat your lips with a water based lip balm like Soft Lips ($3.00).

Along with lips, exfoliation is also the key to healthy skin during the colder months. By removing the dead skin cells that can accumulate, your skin will replenish and feel fresh. Pick up a container of Boots Botanics Cleansing Body Exfoliator ($7.99) at Target, which contains rounded microbeads to stimulate skin and remove dead skin cells. Immediately after exfoliating, apply a lotion rich in aloe vera to soothe and moisturize, like Burt’s Bees Baby Bee Buttermilk Lotion ($8.99).

The many joys of the colder seasons can be enjoyed even more with a moisturized, healthy look. By following these tips, you can ensure that the while the harsh winter may affect your school days, it won’t affect your beauty.
