FCPS introduced ALEKS, an online math learning program during the COVID-19 pandemic. The platform has faced lots of criticism from both students and staff since its implementation. Middletown High School students and staff give their opinion on the program, what’s bad about it, what’s good, and how it can be fixed.

Matthew Hazel, RT Today Producer
Matthew Hazel is a sophomore at Middletown High School. This is his second semester in journalism. Matthew originally took journalism out of curiosity after the class was recommended to him in 8th grade. Matthew immediately fell in love with the class and is now taking it to prepare for a career in journalism or a broadcasting field. Matthew plays ice hockey and is on the JV Middletown Valley ice hockey team, as well as the Lower A Frederick Freeze ice hockey team. Matthew Hazel also has an eye disease called stargardt’s disease. It is a rare form of macular degeneration that affects his central vision. It makes it difficult to read and see small details like faces and pictures. Matthew is originally from Boyertown, Pennsylvania which is a small town outside of Philadelphia. He and his family moved to Middletown seven years ago.
