As the 2024-2025 school year is coming to a close, graduating MHS seniors are playing in their last high school sports seasons. From freshman year tryouts all the way to senior night, students reflect on the impact their sports have had on their lives by answering questions and giving advice to people wanting to try out the sport. Players in lacrosse, softball, baseball, track and field, and tennis have put so much time and effort into their sports to finish off their final season the best they can individually and as a team.
Both the boys and girls lacrosse teams became state finalists this season with the boys team taking home the MPSSAA boys lacrosse championships 1A. Anna Washart and Jackson Bennett both played attack and helped bring their teams to the state finals. Regarding new players, Washart advised, “Don’t try to be anyone else. Just be yourself and that will be enough.” Bennett, who is a starter and team captain said he makes sure to set specific time aside for homework so he can better balance school and sports.
The MHS softball team finished their season with 14 wins and only 4 losses. Their only senior, Channing Lowe, made all-county first team last season and can play anywhere on the field. When asked why Lowe started softball she said, “Well originally I played baseball and then, you know, all the girls were playing so I wanted to be with my friends.” Although Lowe said she began softball so she can be with the girls, she has become a huge asset to the Middletown softball team finishing her senior season with a record of 14-4.
The Middletown baseball team holds the Maryland 2A West Region championship title for 2 years in a row. One of the four seniors on the team is Dylan Leadbetter. He has played baseball for 10 years as a catcher and shortstop. Leadbetter has played on the Middletown team for a long time, yet while reflecting on his high school career he said, “It passes by pretty quick so make every day as good as you can.” Leadbetter advised younger players to not take anything for granted because soon all the games and practices will just be a memory.
The track and field team at Middletown High School has athletes from both the girls and boys teams heading to states. Senior Bri Lee has run track for 3 years, not only is she a runner but she also plays varsity basketball and flag football, making first team all county for flag. Felice Levec has run track for 4 years and will continue his track career at Division 1 Delaware State. Lee commented regarding track, “The practices are hard but it’s okay it’s worth it.” Levec agreed, “You’re gonna wanna quit everyday, but you’re still gonna show up to practice.” These two seniors have worked incredibly hard at this sport and encouraged new athletes to put in the effort as well because it will pay off.
Senior Colin Phillips participated as a vital player on the MHS unified track and field team. When asked what his favorite part of a unified track is, Phillips said, “My favorite part was running on the race track.” Thanks to all of the hard working athletes, the unified track and field team won the state championship this 2025 season.
The Middletown tennis team has 5 seniors, one being Sharon Martin. She has played tennis for 9 years and plays first singles for the Middletown tennis team. Regarding new players trying out tennis Martin advised, “Always go into every practice trying to learn something new and you become a better player that way” Martin has played varsity tennis throughout high school and greatly contributed to the program.
All senior athletes, especially the ones mentioned, will be leaving behind a legacy in their sports. These students have made a huge impact on their coaches, teammates, fans, and the entire athletic program at MHS. The school knows that they will go on to do great things. Still, they will be sincerely missed, not only as players, but also as individuals, here at Middletown High School.
