Mr. Kady’s Journalism class joins in on the spirit week festivities by dressing in all camo. Camo day was a popular day with all grades alike.

Only one week a year will you be able to walk into Middletown High School and see ag students dressed as movie characters or drama students decked out in camouflage. No, it’s not an alternate universe or the twilight zone; its spirit week and it’s awesome.

For as long as I – or anyone for that matter – can remember, spirit week has been a tradition before the big Homecoming football game and dance. Every day has a different theme and students and faculty are all encouraged to participate in the schoolwide competition amongst grades to see who has the most school spirit. It’s definitely the most fun week of the year and helps break free from the otherwise dry monotony of a regular school week.

Yet a lot of students don’t make the most of this week and my question is, why? Why not have a little fun with it? This is your excuse to wear that wig you have sitting in your closet. Want to paint your face? Go for it. Dye your hair? By all means. I mean, come on, I showed up to school in full Ron Burgundy attire, complete with quaff hair and mustache. Did I get a few strange looks? Of course, but that’s half the fun.

As far as I see it, there’s only one reason to not participate in spirit week, and that’s if you don’t go to MHS. Maybe you just didn’t have the proper apparel for some of the spirit days. But I’m sure your friends will lend you something to wear. Or you could go to the greatest American store known to man: Walmart. Throw together a full outfit in a matter of minutes for like 20 bucks. Walmart is a spirit weeker’s best friend.

I assume that some of the sophomores and most of the freshmen didn’t participate this year because they were afraid of getting teased or laughed at, but let me tell you from a senior’s standpoint that you’ll probably be singled out more if you DON’T dress up and go crazy. You’re going to look ridiculous, so learn to laugh at yourself and with your friends. It isn’t going to kill you. Ninety-nine percent of the people you see looking at you and laughing are laughing with you, not at you.

Bottom line is this, if you go to MHS, you should absolutely take full advantage of this awesome week. It only comes once a year, so why not? If you don’t join your friends in dressing up, you’re most likely going to look back in a few years and regret not having the crazy pictures or good memories that come with it. Spirit week may just seem like a silly excuse to be out of the ordinary, and in a way it is. But it is also a great way for all grades to come together and support our school.
