“A Minecraft Movie” is a film where 4 humans go into the world of Minecraft where they can do whatever they can dream of. This will break down the different scenes of the movie into four categories, Story, Mood, and character development, and the bonus category humor, of each scene, as well as this review being shrunk into more important, manageable parts for simplicity.
First, we’ll go over the story, which is about the army of piglins under Malgosha’s rule planning to take over the overworld. Throughout the story, each character shows their true self, like Garrett being very greedy, and Natalie feeling too pressured to do everything herself. Eventually, they work together, think of a great plan, and take down the piglin army. Overall, this movie’s story semi-lacks, in the fact that Malgosha isn’t even from any other spin-off game or main series game, they were created specifically for this movie, which is kind of weird considering the main series game has 3 different bosses they could’ve used as a substitute. The protagonists’ conflicting personalities make up for some good character interactions, but that necessarily isn’t the focus for the movie, and shouldn’t be at all. Thankfully the ending is great, a big fight with good vs evil, and really wraps everything up, as a whole I’d give the story a 6/10.
Next, the mood of the movie, which is very all over the place, not necessarily bad for a movie, but not the most liked aspect either. They have lots of moods like more sad parts, more happy parts, and some angry parts in there. The first major mood switch is after the cave scene, where Henry realizes Garrett’s true intentions in the Minecraft world. The mood switches to a more angry tone, as Henry gets mad at Garrett for being greedy and side-tracking them for some diamonds, which shows a lot of tension between the two characters. The next part is between Natalie and Dawn, where Natalie explains how pressured she feels to take care of Henry and also provide for the both of them, which has a sentimental value and makes the viewer feel bad for Natalie. Third is Garrett’s “Death”, where he helps Henry and Steve get away, and sacrifices himself for them, creating a sad mood. Finally, a heroic end to the movie screams power, as the final fight with good vs evil has its ups and downs, fluctuating moods from excited, to scared, to shocked, to joy, it’s all over the place and is a perfect end. The mood constantly changing, and ending up working out over gives this statistic an 7.5/10
Third, the character development throughout the movie. All throughout, the characters are very different from their beginning to end. First, Garrett is greedy at the beginning, and ends up changing and being more team-focused, less greedy and more friendly. Henry is next, and he kind of changed, at the beginning he’s kind of a nerd, nobody at school likes him, and he’s pretty self-centered, near the end he’s talking to more people, being more social, more friendly, and more responsible. Natalie starts out as a distressed sister just trying to make a good life for her and Henry, she couldn’t really be calm without her brother and was usually worried. Near the end she finally realizes that Henry can take care of himself and lays off of him, making her a lot calmer and collected. Dawn wasn’t really changed, which kind of sucks, should’ve made some character development for her too. Finally, Steve has some character development, at first he’s looking for an escape to reality that he ends up finding, and not wanting to do anything else but that. Near the end he realizes that he doesn’t want to spend the entirety of his life alone, so he leaves the minecraft world, which takes bravery, developing Steve’s character even more. Overall the development of all the characters was very clear, interesting and great, they played it perfectly, for a good 8/10 in character development, the only reason it’s not 10 is Dawn holding it back.
Finally, the bonus category humor is last. The humor is pretty good in the show, with the many lines that everyone joked about online, such as “This..is a crafting table” “I..am steve.” “Water bucket, Release!” and of course, “Chicken jockey”, but besides that, Jack Black of course had an influential part in the humor with his hilarious lines like “they love crushing loaf” and “Slime cube!”, so overall the humor in the movie is top tier, and that’s why I’m giving this category a 9/10.
In conclusion, “The Minecraft Movie” is an all-around good film that screams entertainment, and has great aspects with its story, mood, character development, and humor, this review expanded on all of those topics, and overall as a final review for this movie, I give it a solid
7.5/10!!!!
