MHS students react to drone racing

Recently a group of drone operators posted a video on the internet  racing their camera equipped robotic quad copters through a forest.  As of now, drone racing is an underground hobby for enthusiastic drone goers to make it into a profitable business.

Stephen Ross, owner of the Miami Dolphins, says that drone racing could be the next big thing. This past summer, Ross gave1 million dollars to fund the drone league experiments. This allowed a small group of drone flyers to come together in New York to race drones. “You have this ridiculous connection to it,” said Ryan Gury. “It feels like you are a superhero.” As of now, drone racing will continue to be a hobby until enough interest grows to make it a sport.

“I don’t really see how drone racing can be a sport,” Said Middletown High School Senior Sam Shearn. “It’s all about whose drone goes the fastest. You really don’t have any control over it.”

“It’s an interesting advancement in technology,” States MHS Senior Nate Spector. “Advancement in drones has many different possibilities.”

MHS Senior Shane Clark believes that we should explore more about drone racing because of its potential to be something interesting.
